Over the holidays, I visited my parents back home and went to this old stationery shop that I used to frequent when I was growing up.

I don’t have any pens that are metallic colors because I always had a bad experience buying them growing up. First, they were low quality, and second, I never used them much because they didn’t write well and ended up going bad (the gel and ink separated in the barrel – anyone else ever had this happen?). But I do like the metallic colors and the idea of decorating a hand-written card or a journal with it.

So when I saw these Pilot Juice pens in the metallic color set, I wasn’t sure whether I should give these a try or not. I have the blue Pilot Juice pens which writes fairly well and these look like the same type of pens. So I decided to give these a try, I thought maybe I could use it for decorating my bullet journal.

First Impression

My first impression was that the metallic colors were vibrant and you can see the flecks of metallic silver under the colors to give it a shiny metallic look. The ink writes well as expected, like the other Pilot Juice pens. And the clip was a nice touch, similar to the other Pilot Juice pens. You can use it to clip to a page or accessorize it. But I personally do not use the clip myself and I don’t find it getting in the way.

Ink Test

The pen writes smoothly, I don’t get any gaps between and the metallic colors show really well. But I do find that since it is a water-based pigment gel ink, the ink doesn’t dry very fast and it smudges easily. In my experiment, it takes at least 5 seconds before it is safe to go over the ink with your hands to avoid smudging. And since I use these pens for decorating, such as coloring in something or a drawing, I let it sit for 10 seconds before even closing the journal.

Final Thoughts

I really like these metallic pens and can see many uses for them in arts and crafts, journaling and decorating. To be honest, I am still not too sure if I will use them as often as I’d like because I have a lot of colored pens already I use for journaling. I can see these pens used for embellishment, but want to use them for more projects and ideas. I also read that the Pilot Juice metallic colored pens work well on black colored paper. I have yet to try this since I don’t have any black colored paper myself. But it sounds like a fun project to do. How do you use your metallic colored pens?
